Black Homeownership Programs Face Scrutiny Under Trump Administration.

(ThyBlackMan.com) “Investigating a bank for following the government’s own rules to create paths to address longstanding discrimination in lending is an abuse of the agency’s investigative authority and a transparent attempt to scare every lender in the nation away from their legal obligation to serve underserved communities.” — Nikitra Bailey, executive vice president, National Fair Housing Alliance

The Trump Administration’s reported investigation into Wells Fargo’s efforts to increase Black homeownership is not about fairness, equal treatment, or protecting the integrity of our financial institutions. It is part of a growing effort to demonize, dismantle, and ultimately eliminate any initiative that seeks to address the enduring consequences of racial discrimination in America.

Black Homeownership Programs Face Scrutiny Under Trump Administration.

According to published reports, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is investigating programs intended to increase homeownership among Black Americans and other historically underserved borrowers. The investigation reflects a growing effort to portray initiatives that address racial disparities as inherently suspect.

For much of the twentieth century, Black Americans were systematically excluded from homeownership through redlining, racially restrictive covenants, discriminatory lending, and unequal access to federally backed mortgages. These deliberate, discriminatory policies created the racial homeownership and wealth gaps that persist today.

Homeownership remains the primary engine of wealth creation in America, yet Black families continue to own homes at significantly lower rates than white families. The wealth that was denied to one generation cannot be passed to the next.

That history matters because the administration is not investigating the discrimination that produced these disparities. It is investigating efforts to address them.

At a moment when America faces a housing affordability crisis, a severe housing shortage, and a stubborn racial wealth gap, the federal government has chosen to target programs designed to expand access to homeownership.

The chilling message to lenders could not be clearer: If you develop programs to reach underserved communities, you may become a target.

Financial institutions do not operate in a vacuum. When government treats efforts to expand opportunity as a legal or political risk, lenders pull back. Innovation slows. Investment dries up. Families who might have gained a pathway to homeownership are left behind.

It’s a recipe for preserving inequality.

The administration and its defenders continue to pretend that acknowledging racial disparities is itself discriminatory. But there is nothing fair about ignoring the consequences of discrimination while attacking those trying to remedy it. There is nothing colorblind about pretending barriers do not exist. And there is nothing unifying about telling communities that have been excluded for generations that any effort to address those inequities is unacceptable.

We should be increasing housing supply, expanding responsible access to credit, enforcing fair-lending laws, and helping qualified families achieve homeownership. We should be strengthening the foundation of economic mobility, not attacking it.

Homeownership is not merely a housing issue. It is a wealth issue. A retirement issue. An education issue. A community stability issue. It is one of the most important pathways through which families build security and pass opportunity to future generations.

When government discourages efforts to broaden access to homeownership, it is not defending fairness. It is defending the inequitable and discriminatory status quo.
